Success for students in maths challenge

28th April 2017

Intermediate Maths Challenge studentsEarlier in the year sixty of our year 11 students sat the Intermediate Maths Challenge. The Challenge is a 60-minute test designed to test students’ logic and mathematical skill. It is a countrywide competition that allows students to compete nationally as well as in their respective academies and schools. The top 60% of students nationally receive a gold, silver or bronze certificate in the ratio 1:2:3.

National student Charlotte Gould placed in the top 5% in the country, a massive achievement. This also allowed her to go on to sit a second paper, ‘The Pink Kangaroo’.

Mrs Shaw, maths teacher at the academy commented, “‘I am always proud to see our students push their understanding and take part in the challenge with enthusiasm. This year the intermediate challenge saw a great number of students succeed – it was also pleasing that for the second year in a row one of our students finished in the top 5% nationally, allowing for them to compete in the harder paper. Well done to all involved.”

Certificates were awarded to:

  • Gold – Charlotte Gould, Farrell Brice, Jordan Smyth
  • Silver – Todd Lithgow
  • Bronze – Louis Tomlinson, Lizzy Porter, Ryen Pratt, Stan Smith, Tino Tom, Grady Dixon, Evan Howieson, Nathan Seaman, Kieran Mozley, George Blackford, Abbie Smith, Samuel Sproule and Lewis Hudson
