Rolls Royce success for Mr Topliss

28th March 2018

Mr Topliss - Rolls Royce Science AwardsMr Topliss, head of our ADT faculty and teacher of engineering and design technology, has recently received the great news that he has been successful in reaching the semi-finals of the Rolls Royce Science Awards for excellence in teaching.

To be successful in getting this far in the competition Mr Topliss has been working on embedding mathematics into design technology with students at the academy. He has produced an action plan about how to promote this, working alongside colleagues such as mathematics teacher Mrs Shaw to produce engaging materials and ‘trigger projects’ – these are projects which take place within ADT and science with maths sitting behind them, for example, when designing and engineering a bridge to withstand certain weights and forces.

Mr Topliss, who also leads on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) at the academy, has further promoted this initiative to colleagues at the academy during INSET days, and has worked collaboratively with other design technology teachers at academies within the Diverse Academies Learning Partnership. He has also supported students’ understanding of the importance of STEM subjects in their development and how they link to other subjects through assemblies at the academy and by producing posters to go up around the ADT faculty.

Mr Topliss says, ‘I am really pleased to get this far and look forward to submitting my plans in May ahead of the selection of the finalists. My aim is that the plan will support students making progress in STEM subjects, motivate and inspire them in lessons, promote wider STEM skills and hopefully encourage some of our children to aspire to careers and further education in related areas.’

The finalists for these awards will be announced in July, and we are all rooting for Mr Topliss! In getting this far he has been awarded £1000 for the academy, with the overall winner receiving £5000 to support the implementation of the action plan.

We will keep you all updated on the progress of the awards and wish Mr Topliss good luck!
