Thought for the Week - Education

2nd February 2018

Academy chaplain Andy McKibbin will be providing us with a Thought for the Week each Friday from now on, around different themes with the aim of making us think about ourselves, about others and the values we hold dear. The first of these is on the theme of Education.

Bible Reading: Proverbs 18:15 “Wise men and women are always learning, always listening for fresh insights.”

There are so many great and inspiring quotes about the value of education available to us but the one that really struck me when I read it was this from C. S. Lewis; “Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil.” Knowledge without a framework of sound moral and ethical values can end up causing more harm than good.

It makes me extremely proud to be part of this academy; where ‘Education WITH values’ is the focus of all we do. Each member of staff; both teaching and support are involved in achieving this goal. Our daily interactions with students have huge importance; we set the tone, create the environment. We are called to be role models of the values at the heart of this academy; “Achievement, Respect, Charity and Humility: an ARCH, underpinned by two pillars of Wisdom and Service and held together by the keystone, placing God at the centre of our academy.” The question that leaves us with is thus; ‘what do these values mean to us personally, and how do we model them?’

Prayer: Lord, help us to be people of integrity; whose value system is one that brings out the best in ourselves as well as others. In our search for wisdom may we be open to new insights. In Jesus name, Amen.
