Year 10 specific academy reopening update

From Monday 15th June, we are looking forward to welcoming back year 10 to the National academy main site. Following Government guidance, students will receive face to face contact with both their subject teachers and a member of our pastoral care team before the summer break. We will do this with vastly reduced numbers each day and changes made to our site and systems to keep everyone on site as safe as we possibly can.

There will be one pastoral day for students during week commencing 15th June 2020, split into House Groups. Additionally, each year 10 will attend for one further week during either weeks commencing Monday 22nd June, Monday 29th June, Monday 6th July or Monday 13th July. These will be curriculum focused weeks where an adjusted timetable will be running. They will get to see their particular subject teacher for all of their GCSE examined subjects, both core and options. Although there will be no new teaching, there will be a chance to go through the work that has been completed at home and answer questions/ address any misconceptions, so please bring in some examples of this where possible. We will send you detailed information as to which week your child should attend shortly.

We will be expecting all year 10 to attend but only on their allocated days. Please remember that this is not a ‘normal’ school day and there will be no more than 60 or less year 10s on site each day. Children will be registered when on site and all safeguarding procedures are still fully in place.

As you would expect, the entire site and school day has been risk assessed and all appropriate and reasonable measures are in place including alcohol gel, handwashing facilities and 2m distancing, in line with government, Notts County Council and other expert guidance and recommendations.

The government have advised that educational settings should not use PPE and therefore no students or staff should wear PPE including gloves or masks on site. The only exception for students is if this forms part of an individual risk assessment due to a health reason which we should already be aware of and we will have already been in contact with you. Only staff dealing with first aid, cleaning or maintenance will be wearing PPE.

We understand that this is a difficult time for everyone and as parents you will have your own views on the academy reopening. We feel we are putting in place as much as we reasonably can to keep everyone as safe as possible and we do see the value in having some face to face contact between students and their teachers even if for a short period of time. We have deliberately taken our time over the decision to reopen and this has allowed us to make physical and systematic changes prior to anybody returning. At this stage we have no further guidance on what happens after this term and if we receive any information regarding September onwards we will of course keep you informed.

A priority is that you take the time to read all of the information and advice which is sent to you. We will not waste your time and we will only send you information which we feel is vitally important to your child’s safety and education.

Please ensure both yourself and your child read the documents sent to you prior to returning to National and sign the updated home academy agreement electronically. Your child will not be allowed on site until this is received.

This is a great opportunity for year 10 to return in a reduced capacity and I know other year groups would have liked the chance to return as well. We are providing an opportunity to see and speak with other students and work directly with our staff, utilising their expertise in an academy context. We hope to see your child before the summer break and thank you again for your continued patience, understanding and support at this time.

Yours faithfully,

Mr M Brailsford
Academy Principal
