Literacy: how we support and nurture your child’s literacy at National

Our aim is to develop students’ disciplinary literacy across all subject areas, close literacy gaps, and foster a culture where reading for pleasure is valued and promoted.

    We have three key priorities:

    • Firstly, to prioritise disciplinary literacy across the curriculum, including targeted vocabulary instruction.
    • Secondly, to develop students’ reading fluency.
    • Thirdly, to develop a lifelong love of reading.

At The National Academy, we recognise that the ability to read fluently and comprehend age-appropriate texts is fundamental to accessing the secondary school curriculum. Students who struggle with reading often face significant challenges across all subjects, which can lead to long-term academic and personal disadvantages. Research consistently highlights the strong correlation between literacy skills and future success. Therefore, we are committed to making reading a key priority and ensuring that no student falls behind in their educational journey.
